India Gate Delhi: Overview

India Gate, official name Delhi Memorial, originally called All-India War Memorial, monumental sandstone arch in New Delhi, which located in Rajpath, New Delhi. It is about 138 feet (42 metres) in height. It stands as a memorial to 70,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army who died in the First World War in between 1914–1921, 13,300 servicemen's names, including some soldiers and officers from the United Kingdom, are inscribed on the gate. It Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the gate represent the architectural style of the triumphal arch such as the Arch of Constantine in Rome, the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and the Gateway of India in Mumbai. which came into existence in December 1917 for building war graves and memorials to soldiers who were killed in the First World War.

Ten years after the foundation stone laying ceremony of India Gate on 12 February 1931, British Officer Lord Irwin, who on the occasion said "those who after us shall look upon this monument may learn in pondering its purpose something of that sacrifice and service which the names upon its walls record."

Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate Delhi

Amar Jawan Jyoti is an Indian memorial built after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 to commemorate the martyred and unknown soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces who died during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The Amar Jawan Jyoti memorial was built in December 1971 and inaugurated by Indian former Prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1972.

The India gate monument, which is illuminated every evening from 19:00 to 21:30. Today serves as one of the most important tourist attractions place in Delhi. Amar Jawan Jyoti is situated under The India Gate at Rajpath in New Delhi and consists of a marble pedestal on which a cenotaph is situated. "Amar Jawan" (Immortal Soldier) is scripted in gold on all four sides of the cenotaph and on top, a L1A1 self-loading rifle stands on its barrel with a helmet of the Unknown Soldier on top. The pedestal is bound by four urns, one of which holds a continuously burning flame.
