Achalagarh Fort Mount Abu Sirohi: History

Achalagarh Fort was built under the reign of the Paramara dynasty. This Monument was Situated at a distance of 11 km from Mount Abu Sirohi, a hill station in Rajasthan, India. Later it was reconstructed and renovated by Maharana Kumbha in 1452 CE. Maharana Kumbha given it name Achalagarh fort. It is one of the 32 forts built during his reign. The fort was made with the purpose to keep an eye on enemy movements. But, The fort is in a dilapidated condition now.

Achalagarh Fort Mount Abu Sirohi: Entrance Gates

The first gate of the fort is known as Hanumanpol. This Pol served as the entrance gate of the lower fort. It comprises two towers built of large blocks of grey granite pillars. After some ascent, stands Champapol, the second gate of the Achalagarh Fort, which served as the entrance gate to the inner fort.

There are several other attractions of historical and religious importance in and around the fort. There is a famous Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple, stone buffaloes, Jain temples and Mandakini Lake.

Achalagarh Fort Mount Abu Sirohi: The Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple

Achaleshwar Mahadev Temple is just outside the fort. This is the temple of Achaleswar Mahadev built in the 9th century. Its commonly called the Shiva temple. In this temple, the toe of Lord Shiva is worshiped. But Lord Shiva Ji has only one temple in the whole of India, where worship the toe of Lord Shiva.

In the temple, there is also a natural Shiva linga and various other idols sculpted in sphatic, a stone which looks like crystal.

In the center of Achaleshwar Mahadev there is a sculptured image of NandiIt is about 4 tons, which is made of 5 meats (bronze, gold, zinc, copper & brass). Nandi is a bull, which Lord Shiva’s vehicle. It is also an epitome of power coupled with righteousness.

Near the Shiva temple, there is a pond. In the pond, 3 stone buffaloes statues stand in the water. These lifelike statues look quite impressive. 

Achalagarh Fort Mount Abu Sirohi: The Jain temples

Many Important Jain temples are there in the precincts of Fort. It takes a 10 minutes climb from the fort. Of these, Parshvanath temple is an important one. These temples are believed to have been built around the 1513 CE.
