Shaukat Mahal Bhopal: History
Shaukat Mahal was built in 1830s as a wedding gift for Sikander Jehan Begum. She is the first full-fledged female ruler of Bhopal. The royal building Shaukat Mahal are located at the entrance to the Chowk area in the heart of the walled city. It is One of the architectural wonders of Bhopal. It is a 19th century palace which was designed by a Frenchman who is descendent the Bourbon kings. It combines Indo-Islamic and European Rococo architectural styles. Post-Renaissance and Gothic styles have been combined in the construction of the Shaukat Mahal Bhopla, which are reflected in its architectural beauty.
The palace is made of white alabaster, and features a series of complicated triangular-shaped arches on the ceiling. The exterior walls are adorned with delicate floral patterns. There is a brick-red building of Sadar Manzil (the Hall of Public Audience of the former rulers of Bhopal), adjoining the palace which once served as the hall of public audience and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. now houses government offices.
